Can I lay garden paving slabs directly onto soil?
While it is physically possible, it is highly discouraged for long-term use. If laid directly on top of soil without a proper foundation, the slabs are highly likely to sink, shift, and crack as the ground naturally moves, becomes waterlogged, or is subjected to temperature changes. For a stable, long-lasting patio, you must excavate the soil and install a compacted sub-base (such as MOT Type 1) before laying the slabs.
What materials are typically used for garden paving slabs?
Garden paving slabs are available in a wide variety of materials to suit different aesthetics and budgets. The most popular options include natural stones like sandstone and limestone, which offers unique, organic textures and colours. For a more modern, uniform look that is highly resistant to stains and frost, man-made porcelain paving is increasingly popular. Additionally, concrete patio slabs remain a highly affordable and versatile option for many garden projects.
What should my base look like for a porcelain patio?
Your sub-base is the most crucial part of the patio. Your compacted sub-base should be at least 100-150mm deep. Also, the final surface must be at least 150mm (2 brick courses) below your damp proof course.
Can I just use traditional sand and cement for the joints?
Yes, traditional sand and cement mortar (typically a 4:1 ratio of sharp sand to cement) is still widely used by many contractors and is highly effective for both natural stone and concrete paving flags. However, 'brush-in' jointing compounds are a better choice for ease of installation and performance.
Is it a different grout for porcelain?
Yes, traditional sand and cement compounds are not suitable due to porcelains non-porous material. The grout chosen should be strong, waterproof and not able to shrink. Our Steintec products will be ideal for porcelain.
