What is Marine Plywood?
Marine plywood is a premium, highly durable grade of plywood designed specifically for wet and highly humid environments. It is manufactured using completely waterproof structural adhesives (WBP glue) and high-quality, defect-free hardwood veneers. This construction ensures the panel will not delaminate (peel apart) or rot even when exposed to prolonged moisture, making it essential for boat building, external structures, and wet indoor areas like bathrooms.
What exactly is plywood and how is it made?
Plywood is a highly versatile engineered wood panel. It is manufactured by peeling raw timber logs into very thin sheets, known as wood veneers or "plies". These thin layers are glued together under intense heat and pressure, with the grain of each consecutive layer laid at a 90-degree angle to the one below it. This "cross-graining" technique makes the finished board incredibly strong, dimensionally stable, and highly resistant to warping or splitting compared to solid wood.
Do you offer a range of sizes of plywood?
Of course, at PGR Timber we hold a range of sizes, including all of the popular thicknesses you'll need. This includes three types of plywood, each serving it's own purpose.
What does WBP mean?
WBP stands for "Weather and Boil Proof" (though it is often incorrectly referred to as Water Boil Proof). It does not refer to the wood itself, but rather to the type of highly durable, waterproof adhesive used to glue the layers of the plywood together. Plywood made with WBP glue can withstand exposure to rain, moisture, and extreme temperatures without the layers peeling apart (delaminating), making it suitable for exterior construction.
